Enjoy an almost car-free ride on some A+ quality gravel from North Bend up to Rattlesnake Lake and, Snoqualmie Pass, through the Snoqualmie Tunnel, and onward to Keechelus Lake and back.
Route Description
RUSA Route #2962, "Iron Horse Trail Populaire"
This route is a jaunt up to Keechelus Lake and back down on the Snoqualmie Valley and Iron Horse Trails. We go through the ~4K Snoqualmie Tunnel in each direction. The entire 102K route is generally on easy gravel, mostly at a uniform 2% railroad gradient. RUSA's relaxed gravel timing rules give us nearly 8.5 hours to enjoy the ride.
LIGHTS AND REFLECTIVE GEAR ARE MANDATORY! The Snoqualmie Tunnel is
profoundly dark and always cold, even in Summer months. Be prepared to layer up for warmth and "nerd up" with reflective gear and lights before entering the tunnel. Expect to encounter pedestrians and cyclists with poor lights (even NO lights) and no reflective gear.
Water and heated restrooms are available at Hyak. There is no food on the route.
[Note: There may be an SIR staffed service stop at Hyak; details TBD.]
Pre-Ride Notes
- The trail is in good shape and clear of major obstacles -- no fallen trees, trail damage, detours, closures, etc.
- There are many areas of standing water and numerous mud pits. This may dry out somewhat before the event.
- The gate between the tunnel and Hyak is sketch. Dismount and walk carefully.
- The drinking fountain at Hyak is out of service. Water is available in the restrooms. The two restrooms at the south end of the building (towards the lake) have showers and higher pressure water.
- The Garmin cues got a little wonky near the turn-around point. Turn around at the "Avalanche!" interpretive sign (51.1K) in a small hutch between the trail and the lake.
- A few photos are availabe on the pre-ride recording on Strava and RideWithGPS.
