SIR is “hosting” a point-to-point brevet from the Space Needle to the Golden Gate Bridge. After a jog into the Cascade Mountains, the route makes its way to the Astoria bridge and then pretty much will follow the coast from there. In true “audacious” spirit, the ride will be completely unsupported.

See https://ridewithgps.com/routes/49087924 (RUSA Route #3478) for details.

The general gist of the plan:
  • Date: September 8, 2025 (start time TBA)
  • Distance: Approximately 1744K
  • Time limit: 145:20 (assuming 1744K is final distance)
  • Elevation gain estimate: 18,000 meters
  • Qualification requirements: prior 1200k experience / permission of organizer
  • Ride fee: TBA but will be low
Registration details will be on SIR website in early 2025. In the meantime, an interest list is available at https://forms.gle/586Vxi46hozizY7q7.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What support will be provided on the ride?
A: None.

Q: Is personal support allowed?
A: Personal support is allowed anywhere in the towns where the controls are located (Longview WA, Lincoln City OR, Bandon OR, Eureka CA, and Fort Bragg CA).

Q: Where will I eat and sleep?
A: That’s up to you. We suggest that you research the route in advance.

Q: Will the cue sheet identify supply, food, and lodging options?
A: No.

Q: Will there be assistance getting bike boxes from Seattle to San Francisco?
A: No. Many riders have reported good experiences with BikeFlights.com, but SIR can’t guarantee success with them or any other methods of transport.

Q: Do I need a satellite tracker?
A: SIR has not decided whether to require a tracker, but it’s strongly recommended in any event. We will likely create a ride page on Spotwalla to which satellite (or even cellphone) trackers can be linked.

Q: Is the route final?
A: We will monitor road construction and other issues up until departure, so changes are always possible, even up to the last minute. The version of the route linked here should be “final” enough for purposes of planning your ride.

Q: How did SIR determine the route?
A: From a variety of sources including previous SIR rides, contributions of other riders, and some other research. We received invaluable contributions from RBAs along the route, especially Eric Larsen of Humboldt Randonneurs, who provided much of the California portion of the route. Indeed, for even more challenging routes through that area, check out the Humboldt Randonneurs 1200 and other rides at humboldtrandonneurs.com.

Q: Will there be a rider limit?
A: TBD, but probably no.

Q: Will there be a mandatory pre-ride meeting?
A: Probably. Location and time TBD.

Q: Do I have to be a member?
A. Membership in Seattle International Randonneurs (free) and Randonneurs USA (not free) is required to register for and to participate in the brevet.

Q: How do I keep up with news about the event?
A: First, make sure that you are on our interested riders list (above). Second, please check this page periodically. We also have a Facebook event page.

Q: I have other questions. Whom do I ask?
A: Send questions to seasf2025@seattlerando.org. Don’t expect immediate responses, but these FAQs will be updated from time to time to answer questions.
