As our Brevet Week this year will be east of the mountains, we obviously HAVE to head out the Middle Fork!

Route Description

RUSA Route #2724 "2023 Spring 300K No Middle Fork (Alternate Route)"

Route Update

Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating and there is a real chance of snow accumulation on Middle Fork Road Friday overnight and early on Saturday. We have published a new route this evening (Thursday, 03/23/23 at 10:00PM). The RWGPS link has changed. Please download the FINAL route from the new RWGPS link below.

The start and finish locations are unchanged -- Start at Peet's Coffee, finish at the Redmond Inn. We've dropped the North Bend/Middle Fork section and added an out-and-back on the Centennial Trail from Machias to the Nakashima Barn.

The SIR staffed control will be at about 140k at the Machias Trailhead. Some of you may even get to see us twice on your way out and your way back.

We are making this change to avoid the snow. I know it is not as scenic, but hey at least your bikes know how to ride themselves up and back on the trail.

Matt Close's Pre-Ride Notes

You are in for a route that offers much of what makes riding in the PNW so enjoyable: Mountain views, rural roads, some challenging hills and some protected bike bike trails to finish off some of the bits in the dark. This is an early season ride. You must have front and rear lights securely mounted to your bicycle, and must bring a reflective vest, even if you believe you will finish in daylight. The weather could be wet, so we encourage you to have fenders on your bicycle to avoid the wrath of your riding companions.

You will start off with a cruise down the east side of lake Sammamish - we have elected to ride in the bike lane so there won't be a need to hop between the trail and the road. You'll wake your climbing legs up as you take a left on Lake Thompson road and head up and over the Plateau. Once you are down in the Snoqualmie Valley, you'll put in a few miles on busy-ish Hwy 202 as you head to Fall City.

From Fall City you'll head through the Sno-Valley and travel familiar roads through Carnation (you'll ride right by Sandy's) and up to Ben Howard road. Be ready for that little kicker we all know and love that will wake your legs back up from the flatter roads in the Valley.

As you roll into Sultan and make your way toward the bike/pedestrian bridge over the river, look for one of those new flashy SIR control signs as we will have a manned control at the Sultan Skate park / Riverside Park area (164 km / 102 mi). We will have water, cokes, Cup-o-Noodles, some sort of light sandwich or wrap and assorted snacks. There are non-glamorous Porta-Potties here as well.

After leaving the control, you'll do some climbing heading up to Granite Falls. After an info control in Granite Falls at the Chevron/McDonalds, you'll ride on some hilly back roads on to Machias (was it really a good idea to have that shake at McDonalds?). In Machias you'll ride an easy out-and-back to the Nakashima Barn, then return down south to Snohomish. After Snohomish, you'll head on familiar roads up Broadway, over the three bumps and down into Woodinville. From Woodinville, you'll head around the north end of the lake and around to the 520 bridge. Please note, if you've ridden a previous version of this route, the control near U-Village is now along side of the trail at the intersection with 30th Ave. You will not need to leave the trail. There is a QFC just off route in U-Village if you need anything, but you do not need to go down there if not needed.

You are now in the home stretch. Enjoy the cruise across the bridge and the rollers along the 520 trail.

There will be a team to greet you at the Redmond Inn. We'll have some refreshments and some pizza as you arrive. We will have a room for the check in and refreshments, so if for any reason some one is not in the lobby when you arrive, just wait a second and someone will be there to sign your card and get you checked in. Enjoy!

Parking

Parking is available at the East Sammamish River Trailhead just off NE 70th Street. This is across NE 70th from the Redmond Inn. Due to the potential large number of riders for these brevets, please consider using this public parking option and not parking in the Redmond Inn parking lot.

As a general recommendation, avoid storing things of value in your car, certainly not visible.
