Whidbey Island Coast near Ebey's Landing
RUSA Route #3820, "Fever Dream 400K"
Origin Story
One day in November, 2019 I woke with a 102F fever. I spent that day crashed out on the couch. During my suffering I had a vision for a new brevet: Whidbey Island
AND Camano Island on the same route.
And thus the Fever Dream 400K was born.
Description
Do you enjoy riding on Whidbey Island? What about Camano Island? Now you have the opportunity to ride both on the same day.
This route starts with a leisurely (and relatively flat) section of the Centennial Trail to the northern terminus at the Nakashima Barn, then follows familiar roads to Conway and La Conner. After La Conner it makes its way to Whidbey Island via the Deception Pass Bridge where it largely follows the route of the Whidbey Coast permanent (#998). There are plenty of services which should be open for riders of all speeds. After a tour of Whidbey the route crosses the Deception Pass Bridge again back to the mainland.
After Whidbey Island the route makes its way back to La Conner. The next 30K or so to Stanwood are blissfully flat – use this time to rest your legs and steel your mind for Camano Island. There are few services on Camano Island, and in general they won't be open for most riders. Stock up on water and supplies at the 24-hour ARCO in Stanwood. The next supply point will be this same ARCO in about 48K. Next up is a somewhat truncated tour of Camano, omitting some "favorites" such as English Boom Park and Camano Island State Park. Finally, the route heads back to Arlington and the start/finish hotel.
2026 Pre-Ride Notes
General impressions
- This is a challenging route, do not underestimate it.
- Always be mindful of the time – don't faff at stops. If you get behind the clock, catching up will be difficult.
- Garmin identified 54 significant climbs; pre-riders identified at least 20 more.
- Dozens of these climbs hit grades of 10% or more. Many climbs hit over 15%.
- Most riders will ride Camano Island at night. With great climbing comes great descents – watch your speed when bombing downhill in the dark.
- Lots of road debris and the usual expected hazards on SR 525 and SR 20 on Whidbey Island.
- Watch out for loose gravel on turns on Whidbey Island.
- Watch out for deer, especially on Whidbey Island. If you see a pure white deer, you're probably not hallucinating. These leucistic deer are locally famous.
Specifics
- 25.6K: WSDOT is resurfacing SR 534 between Lake McMurray and I-5. At the time of the pre-ride the eastbound surface was done, but westbound (our direction) had been scraped of asphalt and was very rough. Hopefully this will be completed by the event date.
- 75.0K & 279.0K: Minimal shoulder on SR-20 approaching and departing the Deception Pass Bridge.
- 126.2K: The shoulder of SR 20 is closed for a few hundred meters/yards. The shoulder is blocked by orange construction barrels, freshly paved, and generally ridable.
- 258.3K: Road construction on SE Regatta Dr.
- 282.3K: Deception Rd decends steeply; watch your speed and look out for potholes, especially at night.
- 352.3K & 365.0K: Signs for fresh oil, loose gravel (newly installed chipseal).
- 402.0K: There's a mystery roundabout less than 2K from the finish. This roundabout does not appear on Google Maps, RWGPS maps, etc. Take the second exit (straight-ish) to continue on Smokey Point Blvd.
- 403.6K: (0.3K from the finish) Turn left just before Little Caesars Pizza onto the unmarked 173rd Pl NE. This is apparently a new road and it confused all pre-riders' GPS devices.

Registration includes signing a responsibility waiver using the same SmartWaiver system used for RUSA Permanents. YOU MUST SUBMIT A COMPLETED WAIVER IN ORDER TO START THE RIDE. No waiver, no ride, no exceptions.

General Rules
All riders must:
- Have current memberships in RUSA and SIR.
- Read and sign a waiver (part of the online event registration) before beginning the ride.
- Comply with local traffic laws as well as RUSA's Rules for Riders.
- Have front and rear lights, a reflective vest or sash, and reflective ankle bands. See RUSA Article 10 for details. Be prepared to show these to the ride organizer at the start. Lights should be on during any low-light conditions (rain, fog, night, tunnels, etc).
- Contact the organizer ASAP if they cannot finish (DNF). The organizer's contact info may be found on the brevet control card.
- Turn in their signed brevet control card at the ride finish.
- Check-in with the organizer or a volunteer at the start, the finish, at any overnight controls.
