RUSA Brevet #3595: Wynoochee Dam 300K
Route Description
Something old, something new.
This 300K is based on day 1 of 2022's [in]famous "Third Time's A Charm 1000K", a.k.a. the "Thrice Cursed 1000K". The start/finish have been moved to Lacey, and the route shortened to something closer to 300K (mostly by eliminating the loop around Lake Quinault).
2025 Pre-Ride Notes
- At least 32mm tires recommended. You could probably ride this route with narrower tires, but prepare to be miserable on the gravel.
- The first gravel section (on Cougar Smith Rd, starting at 94.7K) is well packed. The route is climby here, but the gravel is nice.
- The beginning of the second gravel section (on Donkey Creek Rd, starting at 129K) is somewhat loose, so watch your line here. The first 200 meters or so are sketch, then the gravel quality improves quickly.
- The Donkey Creek gravel section appears to end at 142.5K, but not really. The next 9K feature interspersed gravel and asphalt sections. Watch your speed on the asphalt descents.
- Pre-riders saw very little motor vehicle traffic on Donkey Creek Rd. It a lovely, enjoyable road for riding.
- There are no services between the Matlock Store at 76.5K and the Humptulips Grocery at 168.9K. Water and restrooms are available at the Wynoochee Dam Visitor Center (125K) and at the Coho Campground (126K) just before the control at the boat launch (126.2K). This control will be staffed by SIR volunteers; water, other cold drinks, and snacks will be available.
- There is fresh chip seal and loose gravel on Wakefield Rd after departing Elma, from about 235K to 245K.
- This ride is EPP, so you must record it on a Garmin/Wahoo/Phone/whatever.
