Route Description

RUSA Route #2813 "Rivers and Creeks 200K", features scenic and quiet roads, a few seldomly traveled by SIR. It combines neighborhoods with rural roads across the regional plateaus and valleys of north King County and Snohomish County. A few punchy hills are included for fitness boosting measures.

Tom Beck, Eddie Bishop, and Dae Park Pre-Ride Notes from 2023

The pre-riders had great weather to tackle this scenic but hilly course. Strava measured about 7000 feet of climbing and it starts at 0.6K. At 5.7K take note of the cue to turn right on the gravel path. If you see the lovely white fence beside you, you have missed the turn!

Eventually you will make your way to Juel Park in Redmond for the first control. Use caution if you pull into this parking lot. It is gravel, and mostly firm and ok, but they’ve filled some potholes and those are soft but well camouflaged. Don’t ask the pre-riders how we know this!

At 13.0K take care to use the gravel path to the left of the driveway. This is called out on the cue sheet, but that wasn’t good enough for us. If you’re paying attention it’s easy enough to cut over to the gravel when you realize you are on a driveway! Then it’s try to keep your house envy in check as you cruise through a few neighborhoods (Woodinville? Redmond?) where the houses seemed a bit out of my price range! You’ll make your way down to Snoqualmie Valley Rd from here and cruise flat familiar roads for a while. Ben Howard Road is now open all the way through and I was disappointed to learn that it had not been closed so they could remove that one steep hill! It’s still there. It’s only a couple of hundred meters (distance) but my Wahoo showed a 15% grade at one point.

When you get to Sultan, you may have noticed that it had been a while since you’d seen any services. This is a good place to stock up (there are a gas station and Sultan Bakery off course to the right and a gas station on course a kilometer or so after the Hwy 2 crossing (after the pedestrian bridge, at the Owen Rd turn). It’s 40K to the next services so don’t put it off.

It’s a familiar route on Owen, Reiner, Old Pipeline etc that takes you up to Lake Roesiger. The scenery on this stretch is phenomenal, and with all the climbing you will be going slow enough to enjoy it!

When you get down to Granite Falls you’ll want to get those services you’ve been needing. It’s another 30K to the next ones. From Granite Falls it’s a 60K loop around Arlington Heights and Arlington on some busy roads (and a little respite on the Centennial Trail). Views of Mount Pilchuck are awesome, but be aware that the pre-riders saw unusually heavy traffic on this stretch.

The run to Snohomish follows some less familiar (but equally busy!) roads (Carpenter Rd, Three Lakes Rd) back to the Centennial Trail before the Snohomish to Woodinville stretch on Broadway and 156thleads to beer!

Once you reach Hwy 530 outside of Arlington, services are frequent, but until then make sure to get what you need in Sultan or Granite Falls.

Bonne route and may the weather be as nice as predicted!
