Lake Roesiger

Come ride with us to find out what randonneuring is about. We'll continue to build on the 2024 SIR Winter season with our Rouleur (pronounced "ruler") Series Winter 200 ACP Brevet. Read more about the SIR Rouleur Series here.

Route Description

RUSA Route #2134 "Redmond, Lakes, Falls, and Trails"

The route features low elevation (below 240 meters/790 feet) on rural roads. From the start in Redmond, make a gradual climb up to Novelty Hill. Descend down to Tualco Valley and Monroe. Climb up rolling hills to Lake Chaplain. Follow it up with a rolling climb up to Lake Roesiger. Continue with a rolling descent down to Granite Falls with multiple food options (roughly the half-way point). Make a net descent across additional rolling hills out to Arlington. Take a short out and back to Bryant followed by the gradual railroad trail grades on the Centennial Trail. Ride around Lake Stevens and make a stop at Lundeen Park before rejoining the Centennial Trail back to Snohomish. Make one more lumpy climb before finishing on the Sammamish River Trail back to Postdoc Brewing Company in Redmond. All of this packed in against a few scenic peeks of mountains in the distance.

Pre-Ride Notes

From Mark Roberts in 2023 (due to route change, edited and to be updated after pre-ride)

With lakes, rivers and rolling terrain, the Winter 200km brevet is a great ride to get ready for the season ahead. Here are some pre-ride notes for riders.

After leaving the start we will head north out of Redmond along some familiar roads up to the Woodinville Duvall Novelty Hill Road, where we turn east. Although this road has a moderate shoulder, currently it is strewn with winter debris and sand. Be careful, because there can be fast moving traffic on the road even in the early morning — and show caution with the left hand turn across traffic onto 222nd Way onto West Snoqualmie Valley Road at the bottom of the hill.

222nd Way cuts through a subdevelopment of houses, and at the dead-end at the very end of the road there is a narrow but flat single-track trail through the woods. When I rode, it was wet and slippery with a few puddles, and you might dismount where there is a log across the trail and only a small cut out. But you don’t need special tires, as it is only half a kilometer before the trail ends and you turn right onto the road.

At this point we view our first lake with glimpses to the left of Echo Lake (info contol at Aspen Way) before we eventually make our way towards High Bridge Road and descend to the Snoqualmie Valley.

As you enter Monroe, just after the bridge, there is a park with restrooms on the right. Monroe also has services as you make your way through town (7-Eleven on the right). But you probably won’t need to stop this early on.

After leaving Monroe, following a short stretch through a neighborhood, we will turn across Old Owen Road (watch for traffic) to Florence Acres Road and then Old Pipeline Road. This is a nice quiet stretch with some good views, but it can seem like a long way up the mostly gentle grade on Old Pipeline through the park to the turn-around at the end of the road (info control). Then we back track out and head up to Lake Roesiger. We ride the east side of the lake this time, and there is an info control at Lake Roesiger Park on the lake where you can find bathrooms restrooms - if they are closed the store ahead has outdoor port-a-potties. The Lake Roesiger store is just up the road on the left – if you need to refuel it is a good option (the people are nice there), but probably most people will push on to Granite Falls.

For many riders, Granite Falls will be a good place to stop for a snack, water or lunch, even though it is not a control town. There is a gas station convenience store on the right, a McDonalds up the street on the left, and a Subway before the right hand turn onto Jordan Road.

Jordan Road is one of my favorite riding roads, as it runs along the river and gently rolls north to Arlington. Stay to the right, however, to avoid the numerous pick-up trucks that patrol the roads here with flags flying from their cargo beds.

Once you reach Arlington, turn right just past the Grocery Outlet to join the Centennial Trail for an out-and-back to Bryant. There is an informational control at the Bryant Store, and it is another good place to refuel for the ride home.

From Bryant, it is all mostly bike trail back to Snohomish, heading south on the Centennial Trail. We take a ride around Lake Stevens with an info control at Lundeen Park. There are public bathrooms in Snohomish in town on First Street on the left side of the street Unfortunately, Snohomish is not the end of the ride, but we then begin the climb up Springetti Road to Broadway then to Bostian Road, topping off with one last roller leading to the gas station at the intersection at Woodinville – Duvall Road. Then it’s down hill to Woodinville, where you will join the Sammamish River Trail for the flat run-in to Marymoor Park. Postdoc Brewery is just past the exit from the park, in the first set of buildings on the right.

As this is an early season ride, be careful and be prepared. There is a fair amount of winter debris and gravel on some of the roads, and some parts may be slippery. Exercise caution. Bring a couple of spare inner tubes. The days are still short, and with over 5,000 feet of climbing, it may be a long ride. Make sure that your lights are in good working order. If the forecast is for rain, pack a spare pair of gloves for your cold fingers.

Don’t forget to smile – you are riding your bike.
