Route Description
RUSA Route #TBD "Charmed Clover 1200K"
There's a new grand randonnée in town.
Join us for a brand new 1200K route! The 2026 Charmed Clover 1200K is based on the Third Time's a Charm 1000K from 2022. This route features fantastic scenery, including Wynoochee Lake and Lake Quinault on the Olympic Peninsula, Capitol State Forest, the Pacific Ocean, and Mount Rainier.
Approximately 67K of this route is gravel; minimum 28mm tires are advised. Much of this route is beyond cell coverage, so a satelite-based tracker (Spot, InReach, etc) is highly recommended. Some sections will test your rando self-sufficiency skills.
As the name implies, this route has a clover leaf configuration -- the start, finish, and all overnights are at the La Quinta Inn in Tumwater, WA. While this makes logistics simple for riders and organizers, it also makes DNFing temptingly easy.
This would be a great "practice 1200K" for riders contemplating PBP 2027. In addition to the full 1200K there will be a three-day
1000K option. Completing either the 1000K or the 1200K guarantees first choice of PBP 2027 starting time slot.
Notes from the 2022 Third Time's a Charm 1000K
This a brand new route and should entail some great adventuring. We have traveled most of these roads on other Brevets and Permanents, but there are a few twists and turns to keep you entertained. The route consists of 3 loops all starting and finishing at the Tumwater
La Quinta Inn. While that will make it easy to clean up and grab some sleep for each loop, it will also provide an easy temptation to abandon. There are portions of the ride that will require more than the usual rando self-sufficiency. Make sure you check your yearning for sleep and civilization at the door so you can successfully finish the entire adventure!
Pre-ride Notes from the 2022 Third Time's a Charm 1000K
- A satellite-based GPS tracker (SPOT, Garmin InReach, etc) is highly recommended. The route traverses many areas with zero cell service.
- There is, in total, about 67K of gravel on this route, some of it relatively new (and therefore soft/loose). At least 28mm tires recommended.
Additional information is available in the
2022 Third Time's a Charm 1000K pre-ride report.
Day Four Notes
Day four features mostly quiet rural roads and a lovely ride through Capitol Forest. Other than restrooms and water at Tenino City Park (19.3K) services are rather thin until you reach Napavine (87.1K), so stock up on snacks before you depart your hotel. There's a handy 76 gas station/convenience store in Claquato (104.7K) and multiple services in Oakville (154.1K). Stock up in Oakville, as this will likely be your final service stop before the finish. From Oakville you'll take a short (~4K) stretch on SR-12 before turning into Capitol Forest and heading up most prominent climb of the day, Bordeaux Hill. There are services available at the north end of Black Lake (197.4K) for those that need a final boost, then a mere 6.5K to the finish.
Ride Fee
The ride fee is $125 until April 1. After April 1 the fee is $175.
Safety Inspection
All riders must pass a mandatory safety inspection.
NO INSPECTION = NO RIDE. Required equipment:
- Functioning headlight and taillight. Backups and/or spares highly recommended.
- Reflective vest or sash.
- Reflective ankle bands.
An SIR volunteer will be performing safety inspections at the La Quinta start/overnight/finish control hotel on Friday, June 19 from 7:00pm until 8:00pm. Safety inspections will also be available the morning of the ride (Saturday, June 20) starting at 4:15am.
Spotwalla Tracker
In the past we've setup a group page on SpotWalla to show all riders with satellite-based GPS trackers. We will probably do the same this year. Details forthcoming.
Jerseys & Trinkets
All finishers earn a finisher medal.
A Charmed Clover 1200K jersey will be available for purchase before the event.
