Pre-Ride Notes by Millison Fambles

The ride starts at Starbucks at 4700 Avery Ln SE, Lacey.

We head west, on the Yelm Hwy, on familiar roads to Delphi Rd. From there, we climb a little from Waddell Creek, for info control #1 and skirt the east side of Capitol Forest to the control at The End of the Trail Shell in Oakville. We take a little jaunt on Hwy 12, going into and out of the control. This first 28 miles (48k) was cold and drizzly on the pre-ride. As we departed the control, we got just a hint of the sun.

Make sure you leave the control with enough supplies; it’s 30 miles (48k) until the next available services.

Leaving the control east on Hwy 12 for a mile, we turn south on some new roads and into Independence Valley and to Michigan Hill, the first of the climbs. Over the hill, we cruise along Lincoln Creek headed to the next climb up Ingalls Road. Coming down, we head south, flat respite, to Adna, where there are services, 57 miles (92k).

Then it’s a short trip on Hwy 6. Hwy 6 is busy with fast traffic, use caution crossing it. Enjoy the twists and turns of Scheuber Rd to Centralia and the next control at the Chevron station 65 miles (104k). Use caution crossing under I-5 following the sidewalk. Use and obey the crosswalk signal. There is also a coffee shop/deli, Fiddlers, next door to the Chevron and a Subway across the parking lot. We weave through Centralia headed east, toward the new roads that Ian Shopland says should be interesting and will make this a great ride.

Riding into Salzer Valley we found little traffic, good scenery, and new roads — a rando’s dream. A short, steep pull will get you up Grimes Road where you’ll climb a little more up Seminary Hill as you head to the Steam Plant and another info control. Continue northeast on Tono Rd and with that, the Tono Hills, before services in Bucoda, 85 miles (137k).

After the Tono Hills, the route will seem flat and fast. A mile and a half on WA-507, then a right turn on Skookumchuck Road, where we had a little tail wind, which leads to the next info control at Johnson Creek. From there, it’s time for the Yelm-Tenino Trail. Use caution as you cross WA-7, a very busy highway. Then, enjoy a pleasant cruise into Yelm and the control. Return west on the trail to connect with the northbound Chehalis Western Trail to the last info control at Monarch Sculpture Park. Continue north on the trail to the Yelm Hwy and a short ride to the finish at the Starbucks

Pre-ride by Millison and Vinnie and Rick, who made this a no contact route.

Thanks to Ian for the design of a wonderful route.

Pre-Ride Notes by Vincent Muoneke

The ride started in Lacey, we started at about 7am and quickly got on the Yelm highway and crossed over I-5 into Tumwater, we met a little traffic at this point but that was soon to disappear. Enjoying views of Black Lake from the West side. We found Delphi road and opened climbing legs a bit. Coursing south of Capital Forest we found the first Info Control at "Waddell Creek" at the junction of Sherman Rd SW and Waddell Creek Rd SW. Rolling through Capital Forest, past the Mima Mounds we continued south to Highway 12. The short stint on Highway 12 consisted of an out an back to the Control "End of the Trail" on Anderson Rd SW by the Lucky Eagle Casino. The Gas station there has supplies and we spent a little of our banked time there. We quickly turned south out of the busy highway and got on bike friendly roads, challenged by two significant climbs before we found the Info Control at Bunker Creek at Deep Creek Rd. We then Pushed Eastward to cross I-5 again to the Control in Centralia. At this point we are about halfway through the Brevet and it was our only Major stop. Lots of services to choose from in Centralia we opted for a Deli and had lunch. With our belly full and anxious to get home we continued east, totally ignored the Alpha Centralia road, rather turned north to the Info Control at Salzer Valley Rd and Ramsaur Rd at the peak of a moderate climb. And down and on to the next Info Control at the Steam Plant on Big Hanaford Rd in Centralia and then climb to Tono. We ride through Bucoda and head further east to the Info Control at the Skookumchuck Rd SE and Johnson Creek Rd SE. Then we continue north to go find the Yelm Tenino trail and follow it to Yelm with lots of services and services at Rainier on the trail too. We turn around and head back on the trail and veer into the Chehalis Western trail through the Info Control at the Monarch Sculpture Park and back into Lacey

The weather was good, hope that holds for the day of riders and the roads were mostly bucolic and paved. I rode with Millison Fambles and it was a pleasure all day, lots of laughs. I figured about 4000ft of climbing.

Parking

Parking is available in the big lot north of Lowe's Home Improvement. Please do not park near Lowe's, but the spaces on the north side of the lot shoudl be fine.
