Ride Summary:
Point-to-Point route from Federal Way, WA to Eugene, OR.  Beginning at Vinny's place in Federal Way on Friday morning, the first day of this route follows a course similar to the original Cascade 1200 to Carson via Elk and Old Man Pass with a detour through Packwood. Farmland, forest, and views of Rainer will remind you why you love to ride in Washington.

On the second day, you'll ride towards sunrise in the beautiful Columbia Gorge, and then cross the river at The Dalles. The route here showcases Oregon's semi-arid Eastern half as it winds through hilly country dedicated to wheat, fruit trees, and livestock. This climate zone is much dryer than Western Washington and Oregon and can get quite hot in the summer months, and so bringing a third bottle is highly advised.

Although, we plan to have a staffed control somewhere between Dufur and Detroit (195K without other services), you should still plan on carrying extra water and food. A 7 mile stretch of gravel on the South side of Timothy Lake should still be light when you arrive and is passable with all bikes, though you'll be happier with wider tires.

Rise with the sun for a third day, and climb the Santiam Pass to Sisters. Be sure to re-stock water and food before the scenic McKenzie Pass and the Aufderheide Memorial Drive (a low-traffic gem also known as NFD 19) into Oakridge. From here you'll follow the river down towards Euguene, eventually taking the route's only bike paths to avoid car traffic in Springfield.

On Monday, take the Amtrak Cascades train back north to Portland, Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle, or even Vancouver BC and simply hang you bike in the baggage car - no boxes! - and sit back for the journey home. Amtrak actually hangs the bike for you... be sure to "add a bike to trip" for $5 when buying your ticket and check in at the baggage counter for a claim ticket and instructions when you get to the station.
